Feed the Dog

These dogs look well fed and cared for.  They are happily playing together, tug-of-war style.

This is a picture I pulled from google images to use in my class today.
Can you guess how this would be used?
Hint one:  I teach students to sew.
Hint two:  This has to do with using a machine and to do so they need to know parts of the machine and what that part does.
Hint three:  The part of the machine had dog in the name.
YES  Feed Dogs!
What is she talking about?
Sewing people know, the sets of teeth, or rough metal points, rotate to pull the cloth away from you as the needle puts the thread onto the cloth in sewing.  Oh, now you know or already knew.

Merry Friday,

  1. Perfect illustration, and I have a new respect for you...for anyone who sews, really. I took a class, do a little sewing once in a blue moon, but NEVER EVER do I enjoy it. :) Tests my patience that little stinker. ;) I have the greatest admiration for anyone who can wrestle those moody machines.

Have a great day, my friend.

  2. When my daughter sews she always tells her little puppies to mush - lol :)

  3. Okay over my head - but it was interesting. lol. Do you teach during the summer? sandie

  4. Isn't it a dog feed? There is a presser foot and a tension and a reverse and a eye and a zigzag. May those are good dog names? Let's get you a puppy!!!!

  5. Hi Mary
This was a very interesting post.. What fun.. I think this is a great example to use for class.. Will get their minds thinking.

Thank you so much for wandering over to see my parrot and your kind words...

Your blog name was not on the dashboard list either.. It should have been because I am following you.. This has happened with several bloggers on my list as of late.. Maybe there was a glitch.. All seems to be ok now..
Enjoy your week and thanks so much for your visit.

  6. I couldn't sew if my life depended on it, but I enjoyed this post :)

  7. I DIDN'T KNOW! My mother was an excellent seamstress, but I never learned the RIGHTS AND WRONGS of sewing, let alone the parts of the machine! FUNNNNNNN POST MARY! And thank you for visiting! Happy weekend! Anita

  8. Very creative use of photos and words....I've been sewing by hand, since I could hold a needle, and by machine since I was very young, and laughing here...I forgot that they were called feed dogs.

My excuse is when I found out the correct term, was in grade 8, and that's many years ago.

  9. Oh I love how you teach.
I have many sewing machines I am partial to Bernina's and I love to teach young people how to sew the basics. It is a great skill to have. :) B

  10. It has been a while since I spent time with a sewing machine, but do know what feed dogs are. Later this summer, my 12 year old granddaughter is coming to spend a few days with me and wants me to teach her to sew. Can't wait!
