"Fish"

Meet Fish.

This is my first owned formal art piece.  It was a birthday present many,  many years ago.

After graduating from college, I signed up to substitute teach.  I remember the assignment well.
The students watched  a movie of "Eskimo Art."   The narrator spoke of stones found,  then carved to reveal the animal within the stone.  I was enamored.  I told my soon to be roommate all about the lovely stone sculptures from Alaska and Northern Canada.
Soon after that, we located ourselves across the continent, in Boston.
When my birthday came, there came this gift.  She had been visiting art galleries in Boston at every opportunity.  She just happened upon "fish," purchased him  and presented him to me.

Fish has now been in my home for sooooo many years,  and I know he is not a fish.
That's his nickname.
He has some nicks...he is made of soap stone which is very soft.  My children in turn have each had occasion to drop, dip or ding him.    I love his color, form, realism and origins.
He came with a certificate from Frobisher Bay, Alaska, artist, Jonah.
Pictured below is a close-up of his face and feet, as he swims on the table top.

My then roommate and I have remained in contact over the years...and the very best thing is, she will be arriving here soon, for our high school reunion.    Ha, ahahha aaa what memories!

She and her husband have four children, one grand daughter and many degrees awarded to each.  I'd call them very smart, educated and kind people.    My best long term reminder of her,  is this well loved work of art from so many years ago.

What is your favorite art work, formal, amateur, museum piece, sculpture ...???
What is a favorite birthday gift?
What's your favorite memory from high school friends?

Merry memories...Mary

  6. Well Sister, I don't know if I have ever told you this before, but Terry Spencer gave me a bottle of perfume on my 16th birthday and I promptly popped off the lid and squirted it in my EYE. lovely memory of THAT very embarrassing moment. But you know what? I am wracking my brain on who this person was that gave you 'fish'...which I have loved, too ...all these years!?!

  9. Mary,
What a coincidence. I was just going to post tomorrow about the angel Jess bought me that is made out of stone. Your fish is so pretty. It's amazing to me how they carve these pieces out of stone. The artist is very talented indeed. Come by and see my angel if you get a chance.
